Happy Chinese New Year of the Rat!

Dear colleagues and friends,

The Year of the Pig has been a year of institutional reform: Global China Press and Global China Institute (GCI) have become Global Century Press and Global China Academy (GCA), respectively. For reasons of efficiency, we are applying to convert the existing charity into a Foundation CIO (Charitable Incorporated Organisation). CCPN Global engages in work on China in comparative perspective, mainly via a global network and a peer-reviewed journal, for which it serves as a resource. The name of the journal, hitherto known as the Journal of China in Comparative Perspective, is changing to Journal of China in Global and Comparative Perspectives (JCGCP), to reflect its widening scope.

Aims: Global China Academy (GCA) is a UK-based independent academic institution. An affiliate member of the Academy of Social Sciences in the UK, it aims to promote the study of China in global comparative perspective in all aspects. It is also a member of Belt and Road Studies Network (BRSN) of China. As a knowledge-based thinktank and a bridge between China and the rest of world, Chinese and non-Chinese, GCA aims to serve the global public good as widely as possible.

Personnel: There are seven categories of people involved in Global China Academy’s work: 1) outsource experts – in fields such as copy editing, proofreading, typesetting, graphic design, printing, website design and maintenance, legal advice, accounting and logistical arrangements for visitors, 2) staff, 3) Editorial Board, 4) International Consultants, 5) Academic Advisory Committee, 6) Interns and Trainees, and 7) members (about 5,000 signed up, currently non-paying). All the people who are listed in the links above work on a voluntary basis, some playing more than one role. Through them, the Academy interacts with a great number of research and academic institutions and other organizations around the world. Without them, our work would not be possible. Last year, at the 6th Global China Dialogue held at the British Academy, we were very honoured that our guest Professor Lord Anthony Giddens presented a letter of appointment as the Chinese President of the Global China Academy (GCA) to Professor XIE Lizhong of Peking University (see photo).

Structure: GCA’s academic mission is to bring the theories and methods from studies of Chinese society and comparative studies of China from different social scientific disciplines to the court of human knowledge. In pursuit of this aim, GCA maintains a global network of experts and scholars in the humanities and social sciences, the Global China in Comparative Perspective Network and, with its Global Century Press (GCP), publishes the Journal of China in Global and Comparative Perspectives. GCP is uniquely dedicated to publishing social scientific and humanities academic and popular books bilingually in a global context.

GCA’s social mission is to bring resources from China, Chinese and comparative studies to provide knowledge-based social consultancy and build a public dialogue platform, Global China Dialogues (GCD), focusing on global governance-related issues. GCA supports a range of cognate activities all designed to bring China and Chinese thinking into engagement with the rest of the world. These activities include its popular publications and Global China Ecommerce.

Offices and facilities: Global China Academy is effectively a virtual academic community, as its operations are mainly internet-based, although its offices in London and Shanghai are shared with our partners. We continue to update our comprehensive websites in English, Chinese and English-Chinese. We hope you like the new look of our home page (right).  The comprehensive update is expected to be completed by the end of 2020. Your patience while these processes take place is much appreciated, and your comments and feedback are welcome. Thank you.

Work in progress: Through its English, Chinese and bilingual websites, the only ones of their kind in the English-speaking world, and a global network of experts and professionals, we coordinate four main strands of work, described below.

1. China in Global and Comparative Perspectives. After some years of development, we are expanding ‘China in comparative perspective’ to encompass a global vision. We will continue to maintain a global website and network to provide resources and services related to global China in comparative perspectives. As noted above, we are changing the name of the peer-reviewed Journal of China in Comparative Perspective (JCCP) to Journal of China in Global and Comparative Perspectives (JCGCP) in both English (annual) and Chinese (biennial) editions. In addition to social scientific studies of China, we include studies of the humanities relating to China, Chinese people, civilization, culture, language and Chinese ways of thinking. We also includes articles that draw contrasts between China and non-China, Chinese people and non-Chinese people, or academic debates and dialogues between Chinese and non-Chinese. We are applying for both journals to be SSCI listed.

2. Global Century Press. In 2019 we changed the name Global China Press to Global Century Press to reflect its scope and its independence. It remains the only publisher in the world dedicated to publishing social scientific and humanities academic and popular books bilingually, focusing on studies of China in comparative perspective, Chinese perspectives of the world or human knowledge, and non-Chinese perspectives of China in a global context. In addition, we are founding two other journals: the Journal of Chinese for Social Science and the Journal of Corpus Approaches to Chinese Social Science, both published biennially in English and Chinese.

At the London Book Fair 2019, we co-organised an event on the theme “China through British eyes”. The book titles launched included Walk Your Dream (English edition) and Pingju: Real Life Opera of Northern China (English edition), published by New World Press, as well as Walk for Peace: Transcultural Experiences in China (enlarged English edition) and Pingju: Real Life Opera and a ‘Rural Chinese Shakespeare’ (updated English edition), published jointly by New World Press, part of the Chinese International Publishing Group (CIPG) and Global Century Press.

The event featured a roundtable discussion on China and international communications and an agreement-signing ceremony between New World Press and Global Century Press.

3. Global China Dialogue. As a knowledge-based thinktank for social consultancy, we successfully held the sixth Global China Dialogue with the theme ‘Governance for World Peace’ on 6th December 2019 at the British Academy, UK. It was co-sponsored by the Global China Institute (now Global China Academy), the University of London College's Applied Linguistics Centre and the University of Westminster's China Media Centre. Nearly 30 scholars, experts, professionals and practitioners, as well as officials and government representatives, from China, Jordan, Nigeria, France, Germany, Denmark and the United Kingdom, spoke at the Dialogue. In addition to the keynote speeches and closing remarks, the Dialogue featured four panels: Mediation and peace-making in civil conflicts, The Belt and Road and tension reduction between countries and cultures, China's role in multilateral peacekeeping, and Civilizational values and the promotion of peace. The Dialogue attracted nearly 100 participants overall and was supported by many academic institutions as well as China-related organizations and the Chinese Embassy in the UK (see photo report).

4. Global China Ecommerce. The GCA explores mechanisms of social enterprise for the sustainable development of non-profit organizations throughout the world. Global China Ecommerce provides a platform for GCA-related organizations to conduct their business and complete transactions electronically. It is used by: Global China Academy Journal of China in Global and Comparative Perspectives, Global China Dialogue, Global Century Press and the Global China Thinktank. It has developed the following ecommerce products: journals and subscriptions, a book store, event registration, consultations and other services.

We are pleased to report that, in the past year, thanks to all your support in the form of academic input, expertise, fees and subscriptions to our journal, Global China Academy is continuing to grow and thrive. We invite you to enjoy our activities as well as our products. Thank you very much!

With warmest regards and best wishes for a very happy and prosperous Year of the Rat!
